- OFFERING # 44 (VU) IT CAME UPON A MIDNIGHT *
The LORD is with you
And also with you.
Open up your hearts.
We open them up to God.
Let us give thanks to the LORD our God.
It is right to give God thanks and praise.
On this holy night of the Incarnation,
when the Christ of God becomes flesh and dwells in our midst, we begin to comprehend the depths of God’s Love,
who so loves creation that he would enter into it
and become one with it.
Therefore, with the Angels who shone this night with the light of God’s Presence, shattering the darkness of this world,
we are bold to join them as we proclaim God’s Glory:
Holy, Holy, Holy LORD, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory!
Hosanna in the highest!
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!
Hosanna in the highest!
We give You thanks, Almighty God, for your incarnation in Jesus, born in Bethlehem, the House of Bread, from where he would proceed to feed the hungry, lift up the fallen, heal the broken hearted, restore the penitent and proclaim the eternal Presence of God in the midst of human constructs.
As Jesus gathered people around a Table, so we gather now around your Table to celebrate this Heavenly Banquet at which He is the host and to which all are welcome.
As Jesus Christ took bread and gave You thanks, He recalled for us all the wondrous acts of God in human history and incorporated us in the unfolding drama of salvation. Reliving the great body of recorded deeds, Jesus Christ took bread and said, “This is my body that is given for you.
Do this in remembrance of me!”
When all had eaten, He took the cup of covenant renewal and said, this is God’s Pledge to be with us through all time and that God’s blood force will flow in our veins empowering us for mission. In it we pledge to be God’s people, to live as one with each other, and to live together with God. Jesus then gave the cup to his disciples and said,
“This is the cup of a new beginning.
Do this in remembrance of me!”
Later that night, after the meal, the powers of darkness sought to eliminate the Light of God that appeared in Bethlehem,
that shone in Jesus, and that shines at this Table this night. Jesus Christ was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into the darkness of hell, into any and every place where people are cut off from God. There He brought God’s light to those who sit in darkness. On the third day He rose again from the prison house of death bringing all of God’s children home from hell to heaven, from darkness to light, and from exclusion to inclusion.
Remembering his death and celebrating his resurrection and celebrating his coming again to be with us, we proclaim the mystery of faith.
Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.
Send now your Holy Spirit, your living presence, upon these offerings of bread and wine that they may be for us the Body and Blood of our Saviour Jesus Christ, inspiring our memory and empowering our mission.
Send that same Spirit upon us that we may be the living Body of Christ in this world accomplishing your mission and proclaiming your Presence.
Remember your Church scattered on the face of this earth, gather her in unity and guide her in mission.
Remember those who have gone into the fullness of your Kingdom and have joined the great cloud of witnesses who continuously behold your glory and who sit with us this evening at this Table.
Through Christ, with Christ and in Christ,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all Glory is yours,
God Almighty, now and forever, Amen.
As Christ taught us, let us pray in our own language
OUR FATHER….. NOTRE PERE…. AR N-ATHAIR…
ONZE VADER …VATER UNSER… PADRE NEUSTRO…
